Summer melons, they are sweet, ripe and abundant. One whole watermelon, it was popular the first day you cut it open, fresh aroma and juicy red flesh. Everyone wants a slice or two. The next day, the responses were not that enthusiastic. The third day, it was a tough sell. What do you do with the leftovers? I make smoothies with them. It is simple to do. Just blend two cups of fruit and one cup of flavored yogurt in the blender and serve. The sugar content from the fruit and the yogurt is enough to sweeten the drink. Nothing more is needed. I usually use lemon or vanilla flavored yogurt for they compliment instead of clash with the fresh fruit. Not only watermelon, papayas, cantaloupes, Crenshaw's, Sharlyn's, and not only melons, strawberries, peaches, mangoes, whatever is in season will do. The fruit provides the texture and the fresh fruit aroma while the yogurt smoothes the drink over with its creamy and slightly tart taste. Here are a few examples.

Watermelon Smoothie

Two cups of watermelon, tightly packed
One cup of vanilla yogurt

In a blender, blend watermelon for a couple of minutes. Add yogurt and blend for another minute. Makes three one-cup servings.

Galia Melon Smoothie

Two cups of tightly packed melon cubes, skin and seeds removed
One cup of lemon yogurt

Use pulse setting of the blender, blend fruit for 15 seconds at a time then stir and blend again. When fruits become liquid, add yogurt and blend another minute or so. Makes three one-cup servings.

Papaya Smoothie

Two cups of papaya flesh, skinned, seeded and tightly packed
One cup of vanilla or lemon yogurt

Use pulse setting of the blender, blend fruit for 15 seconds at a time then stir and blend again. When fruits become liquid, add yogurt and blend another minute or so. Makes three one-cup servings.

Banana Tangerine Smoothie

One cup of peeled banana cubes
One cup of peeled tangerine slices; use the seedless kind or seeds removed
One cup of peach flavored yogurt

In a blender, add tangerine slices first, and then add banana cubes. Blend for one minute. As tangerine has higher water content, it will turn liquid quickly and help smooth over the blending. Add yogurt and blend for another minute. Makes three one-cup servings.
